Overall, this game is a welcome addition to the gaming landscape.
But here’s hoping they improve on this with future updates.

My only complaints is a distinct lack of Party Mode, it’s a chore to play with your friends because as soon as you find a lobby and invite your buddies, chances are the server will be full by the time they’ve attempted to join. Online is a joy, even though I haven’t won any games, I’ve been close so I’m obviously better than I initially thought. If anything, I’ve found the game to be a little bit too easy when playing through career mode but that’s fine because I’m usually shit at racing games and I’m having an absolute blast with Wreckfest. The controls are highly intuitive and works hand in hand with a difficulty curve that doesn’t penalise you for lack of skill. Other than a serviceable soundtrack, the sounds of crashing cars and the roars of mighty engines really drive home this high-octane power fantasy. Tuning your suspension, gear ratio, differential and brake balance is a far cry from Gran Turismo and is overly simplified with handy descriptions to better aide you in your decisions. It is also exceptionally accessible, even for those that have very little mechanical knowledge.
It’s simple and quick and can make all the difference. The level of customisation isn’t excessive but you’re still able to give your car some personality.įor each race or derby, you’ll want to tune your vehicle to better suit the track or arena.

The levelling system doesn’t require a huge amount of grinding to unlock upgrades for your collection of vehicles, which is certainly welcome because you’ll want to upgrade your car as soon as possible in order to meet certain race criteria. That’s saying something, since I’m not the biggest fan of racing games, but Wreckfest ticks every single box for me.
I had planned to write this article yesterday but I just couldn’t put the game down. The thrill of destroying your fellow racers, trading paint and T-Boning your rivals on a figure of eight makes for a compelling and addictive experience. And I have been waiting a long, long time for a game like this to come along. While I hate to call Wreckfest derivative, it’s hard to get past the likeness with Destruction Derby, if anything, Wreckfest is a worthy, spiritual successor to that gaming classic. This creates remarkable level of detail when it comes to vehicular damage.

Originally released on PC in 2018 after being in early access for four years, Bugbear worked tirelessly to implement soft-body damage modelling, that simulates realistic, physical deformations of objects. Obviously one developer saw a gap in the market and that developer was Finnish developer’ Bugbear Entertainment with Wreckfest.

It is so overwhelmingly surprising that such a game series didn’t have staying power. A genuine original PlayStation classic and while it was published on other systems, the PSX version is the one that most fans are familiar with. Those conversations would inevitably gravitate towards reminiscing about Destruction Derby. I, especially loved the Crash Mode and even back then I remember discussing with my mates, just how awesome it was to play a racing game that featured awesome crashes and vehicle damage. Regular readers might already be aware that I’m terrible at a majority of racing games and when I say “majority” what I really mean is, all racing games apart from the Burnout series.
